Babydoll and her sister in the wake of their mother's death

After the death of Babydoll's mother, Babydoll's stepfather discovered from their mother's will that his wife left everything to her two daughters. Apparently enraged that he worked so hard to marry the woman (and perhaps engineered her death) only to be left nothing, he got a bottle of Paradise rum and drank. He got so drunk that he headed for the girls' rooms, and just as Babydoll was leaving her sister's room, he decided to attack Babydoll. He didn't succeed and then turned his sights on Babydoll's sister. He locked Babydoll in her room and then headed on the younger stepdaughter.

Babydoll, in a panic-stricken state, escaped her temporary holding cell by climbing out her window and found her stepfather's .45 caliber pistol. She stopped her stepfather as he broke into the closet where her sister had locked herself. Scared at seeing Babydoll with a gun, he tried to reason with her, but she fired one round that barely clipped his left arm. She fired again, the bullet piercing his flesh, but the bullet ricocheted, hit a steam pipe, shattered a lightbulb, and then fatally struck her little sister.

Babydoll cried over the body of her sister, horrified at what she had done. Scared and angry, she stalked over to her stepfather who was trying to call the police. She aimed the gun at him, but couldn't bring herself to kill him. She dropped the gun and fled the house. Her stepfather called the police, who arrested the distraught Babydoll at her mother's grave. She was then taken to Lennox House for the Mentally Insane.

Having avoided taking responsibility for his own part in the murder of his youngest stepdaughter, Babydoll's stepfather conspired with the corrupt head orderly, Blue Jones, to forge Dr. Gorski's signature in order to have Babydoll lobotomized so that she could not reveal the truth about the circumstances leading up to her sister's demise. At that point there were five days before the doctor would arrive to perform the surgery on her. During her time in the asylum, Babydoll retreated into a fantasy world in which she was newly arrived in a brothel owned by Blue, a mobster rather than an orderly. While there, she befriended four other dancers: sisters Sweet Pea and Rocket, Amber, and Blondie.

Dr. Vera Gorski encouraged Babydoll to perform an erotic dance like the other girls, during which Babydoll further fantasized she was in feudal Japan, meeting the Wise Man. She told him she wanted to escape, so he presented her with weapons and a list of five objects she would need to escape: a map, fire, a knife, a key, and an unrevealed item that would require a "deep sacrifice" but bring about a "perfect victory." He gave her one last piece of advice before shoving her out the door into the waiting blades of three samurai: she must defend herself. Taking her newly acquired sword in hand, she fought. Once she bested all three warriors, her fantasy ended and she was brought back to the brothel, her dance impressing everyone including Blue.

Later she told the girls she had a plan to escape. Rocket was all for it, but her sister flatly rejected Baby's plan, saying no one had ever managed to escape before. Blondie said the last three girls who tried died in the attempt. Nontheless, Babydoll told them that they needed to find a map, something to start a fire, a knife, and a key, all four of which she saw when she first walked into Lennox House. She told them that when she danced, everyone would be so distracted that no one would notice the girls stealing the tools they would need. After some convincing, the girls joined her in her quest to achieve freedom. First they would have to get the map with all the exits marked on it, which Sweet Pea had volunteered to steal from Blue Jones's office. Baby began to dance, transporting herself into another fantasy world mirroring Sweet Pea's theft. In her delusion, the Wise Man informed the girls that the map was in a German trench guarded by undead steampunk WWI soldiers. After some spectacular fighting and a timely rescue by Amber, the girls secured the map and Babydoll was brought back to the brothel once again.

Next, the girls had to find a way to make fire in order to trigger the fire alarm and thus automatically open all the doors in Lennox House. The Mayor, who was Amber's client, has a cigar lighter that would suffice nicely. Unfortunately it was kept in the man's breast pocket. Amber didn't think she was brave enough to swipe it from him, but, as Blondie told her, he was her client. Just kiss him on the neck and slip your hand down his chest into the pocket, was Blondie's advice to her. Gathering her courage, Amber agreed and Babydoll danced for the first time onstage. This time her fantasy was of an orc-infested castle guarding a young dragon. Inside the dragon's throat were two rocks that when struck would create the most awesome fire the girls would ever see. To Rocket's dismay, they'd have to slit the baby dragon's throat. The Wise Man warned them not to wake its mother and sent them on their mission. Rocket, Sweet Pea, and Babydoll stormed the castle from the ground while Amber and Blondie took the sky. Once they found the little dragon and slayed it. Babydoll struck the stones together, producing a magnificent fire. Unfortunately that fire woke up the mother dragon, and she was not happy to find her baby dead. The girls ran for their lives as Amber led the mother away with her plane. After a bit of chasing the dragon bit off the part of the aircraft that held Blondie's gun, causing Amber to lead the dragon back to Babydoll, saying that the fire-breathing lizard was all hers. Babydoll swiftly jumped the jet of flame the mother shot at her and stabbed the dragon in the head, completing their mission.

Back in their dressing room, the girls celebrated Amber's bravery in getting the lighter and taking one more step closer to freedom. Blue broke in on their little celebration, asking why they were so happy. Sweet Pea explained that they were glad Babydoll did so well in her first time onstage, which can be frightening. Blue was all smiles but was not convinced, instead lightly-but-threateningly accusing the girls, specifically Sweet Pea and Amber, of messing with his stuff and stealing little trinkets from clients. He advanced towards Babydoll, saying that if she wasn't about to make him lots of money dancing for a man they call the High Roller (a rich man who would buy Babydoll's virginity in her fantasy, in reality the doctor who would perform her lobotomy)... Blue left the threat hanging.

Baby Doll - Second Dance

Babydoll's dance scene

With only a few days left, Babydoll knew they must hurry. The next item up was the Cook's kitchen knife. Sweet Pea and Rocket agreed to do this, even though the large, temperamental cook had previously harmed Rocket physically and threatened to rape her before Babydoll came to her rescue. Amber, Rocket, Sweet Pea, and Babydoll all worked in the kitchen waiting for Blondie and Madame Gorski to set up the music. As the clock ticked and the two don't show, the girls started anyway. Rocket sat on the Cook's lap to seduce him as the others tuned his personal radio to more suitable music, spilling a bucket of soaking potatoes near the radio wire in the process. Baby started to dance once more, creating another illusion. This time the mission was to deactivate and capture a massive bomb on a train, set to go off when the train reached the city limits. Sweet Pea, Rocket, and Babydoll handled this mission, shooting every robot set on guarding the bomb. They successfully managed to deactivate the bomb with four minutes to go, hooked it up to Amber's helicopter, and were nearly ready to go when a robot that was blasted in half regained use of its arms and pressed the big bad button overriding the deactivation procedure. Suddenly brought back to the kitchen, Babydoll saw that the radio wire had shorted out in the spilled liquid, messing with the radio, turning it off and back on in quick bursts. The Cook snapped back to attention just as Sweet Pea grabbed the knife from his belt. He shoved Rocket off of him and angrily took out another knife, intending to stab Sweet Pea, but before he could, Rocket knocked her aside, taking the blade meant for her sister in the ribs. As the knife came down Babydoll suddenly snapped back to the bomb on the train along with the music. She had managed to get on the helicopter's ladder, but Sweet Pea and Rocket were still down below. There was no more time to try to deactivate the bomb again, so Rocket pressed a button on her elder sister's jacket, activating her jet pack to send her off into the sky and safety while Rocket stayed behind with the bomb. Sweet Pea screamed her little sister's name as the huge bomb exploded. Back in the kitchen, Sweet Pea took her mortally wounded sister in her arms as the others froze with shock. With her dying breath Rocket asked her sister, when Sweet Pea got home, to tell their mother that Rocket loves her. Sweet Pea promised, and Rocket died somewhat peacefully. Blue Jones burst in at that moment, and seeing one of his girls dead, angrily shouted at the "inbred" cook, snapped at his bodyguards to lock the hysterical Sweet Pea in a closet, and yelled at the remaining girls to get ready for their show. Despite all this Amber managed to claim the knife.

Meanwhile Blondie was crying in the dance room. Madame Gorski found her sobbing on the ground and tried to comfort her, asking Blondie to tell her what's wrong. Before she could, Blue interrupted. He interrogated the badly upset Blondie, and found out about the the girls' plan to escape.

On the eve of Babydoll's last performance, Blue decided to make examples of what happens when people try to escape and "break the foundation of trust." In the dressing room he ranted about how he tried to get all his girls the good life. And he succeeded, so he said. It broke his heart to have his girls conspire against him, even to try to escape. Vera Gorski attempted to calm him down but he struck her instead. To her credit, she stood right back up and continued to try to soothe him. He pressed a gun to her throat and asked her what it was that she does, to which she viciously replied, "I teach them...to survive...you." He very nearly shot her, but to everyone's relief he didn't. Amber started stammering out excuses, terrified to her very bones, but Blue calmly said that it's okay. He nonchalantly walked behind Amber and shot her in the back of the head to the horror of the other girls and Madame Gorski. A terribly guilty and scared Blondie told the girls she was sorry as Blue informed them that Blondie told him what was up. He appreciated her tip off but said no one likes a snitch, and killed her too. He had the bodies disposed of and sent everyone out of the dressing room except Babydoll. He came close to Baby, and compared his job to a sandbox: he was sitting at the edge of the sandbox while everyone else got to play with his toys - but not this time. This time he would take his toys and go home. He then tried to rape Babydoll, but she grabbed the knife they had stolen earlier and stabbed Blue on the left side of his neck. Stunned, he sunk to the floor. She strongly told him that he would never get her, and yanked the master key from around his neck. She ran to free Sweet Pea from the utility closet, who asked where Amber and Blondie were. Sadly, Babydoll stated that it was just her and Sweet Pea. They had all the items at that point, and so initiated the escape plan. They created a fire using a molotov cocktail using a Paradise Rum bottle, and waited for someone to pull the fire alarm, unlocking the doors. All was going according to plan until they saw Blue's drivers at the front gate. Sweet Pea, visibly shaking, was distressed to find their way blocked and despaired, but Babydoll concluded that she was the fifth item. It was not her story after all-- it was Sweet Pea's. She told her friend that she would walk out and create a distraction so Sweet Pea could escape. Babydoll told her to tell her mother what Rocket said, and that Sweet Pea would have to live for all of them now -- after all, she was the only one who could fit in the outside world. She was the only one who still had a life. Quelling Sweet Pea's protests, Babydoll walked out into the open in full view of Blue's men. Sharing a final look with Sweet Pea as the latter sneaked out the front gate, Babydoll kicked one of the men very hard in the crotch.

Babydoll, lobotomized.

Soon after, Baby was lobotomized. The Doctor asked Dr. Vera Gorski what she did to deserve it, saying that the look in Babydoll's eyes just as he did it was almost as if she wanted it to happen. Vera said that Babydoll caused a lot of problems in the one week that she was at Lennox House, including setting a fire and stabbing an orderly, but Vera wouldn't have done a lobotomy as a solution. Confused, the doctor said that she signed the order authorizing the procedure, but Vera said that's not true. The doctor showed Vera the signature he was given, but Vera quickly recognized it as a forgery. Meanwhile Blue Jones and his "bodyguards" led Babydoll to a cell where she would be kept. The bodyguards ware uneasy, saying they didn't like hurting girls and they won't do it any longer, but Blue screamed at them to put Baby in the chair and to shut the door. Alone with Baby, Blue kneeled close to her. He softly complained to Babydoll that she had lost herself, and that she wasn't allowed to lose herself until he said so. Leaning closer, he kissed her. The kiss was broken when police burst open the door, Vera Gorski at their side. They swiftly arrested a clearly insane Blue as he yelled that he takes care of the girls and that nothing was done to Baby -- just look at her face! He struggled and shouted that he would use the bribe Babydoll's stepfather gave him to lower his sentence. An officer shined a light on Baby, asking if she was okay. Babydoll's expression was blank, but she very slightly smiled, suggesting that Babydoll was not completely lost.[1]

Relationships

Babydoll has a younger sister she loves very much, a stepfather for whom she doesn't care, and a deceased mother.

Babydoll's sister

This dark haired younger sister is much beloved to Babydoll. She is almost assaulted by her stepfather. Baby tries to save her, but accidentally kills her instead and is arrested.[1]

Babydoll's Stepfather

Babydoll and her sister really hate their stepfather. Becoming very drunk, he tries to assault Babydoll and then her sister. Baby tries to shoot him twice, but fails to get a clean hit both times. He gets the police to throw her into a mental hospital and bribes Blue Jones to secure a lobotomy for her so she will never tell anyone the true circumstances around her sister's death. He may also be responsible for their mother's death as well. In Baby's fantasy, he is a priest and she spits in his face.[1]

Babydoll's mother

She evidently loves both her daughters very much and left them everything when she died. She left her husband nothing, which causes conflict in the household. The stepfather is pleased when she finds out she has died.[1]

Rocket

Baby's first friend in Lennox House. Rocket welcomes Baby with open arms and gives her a few pointers about surviving the place. Babydoll saved Rocket from being raped by the Cook when he caught her stealing chocolate. Baby, along with the other girls, was horrified by Rocket's death.[1]

Sweet Pea

Sweet Pea and Baby are on very uneasy terms until the end of the film. Sweet Pea views Babydoll as a danger to her sister, Rocket, with all this talk of escaping. She does not trust Babydoll, and only joins in on the plan in order to protect her sister. The two are seen as equals since Babydoll is the leader of the group and Sweet Pea is the oldest among them.[1]

Amber

Baby and Amber get along quickly, due to Amber's great deal of empathy for Babydoll's tough position. Amber is the first to join the escape plan. Babydoll hugs Amber when the latter successfully steals the lighter, and Baby is upset when Amber is killed.[1]

Blondie

Blondie is at first not too sympathetic towards Baby, but is impressed like the rest at her considerable dancing skills. When Baby presents her escape plan, Blondie readily joins in.[1]

Personality

Babydoll is trying to hide from the pain and guilt caused by her stepfather and the deaths of her mother and sister. Imprisoned in a suspicious mental institution, she retreats into her mind and imagines a fantasy world where the lines between dream and reality begin to blur. She thinks up an escape plan, demonstrating leadership and quick-thinking qualities.

Appearance

Babydoll has pale skin, blue-green eyes, and light blonde hair. Although she is identified as being 20 years old, her small stature, large and vulnerable eyes, slender frame, and long, wavy, girlish pigtails make her look a bit younger. She is referred to as "Babydoll" in deference to Blue, such as when Sweet Pea tells him, "Your Babydoll is dancing," and when Madame Gorski introduces her onstage as, "This little... Babydoll."

Costume

Babydoll's costume includes a blue sailors top, though overall her outfit looks like a Japanese school girl (sailor fuku). Babydoll's costume features a midriff-bearing top with nautical collar and flap, and a miniskirt with a large slit. It comes in 3 forms: one is navy blue, another is a dull gray color, and the last one is her costume for the High Roller-- white, covered in sparkles and rhinestones. She also has a revealing dancing outfit consisting of a sleeveless, tight-fitting pink top and black bottoms that show off her legs. Even though she is seen without a headband from time to time, her platinum blond hair is always worn in two long pigtails.
